The Problem of Creation – Creating One’s Self
“The problem is not that there are problems. The problem is expecting otherwise and thinking that having problems is a problem.” – Theodore Ruskin

“There are only three colors, ten digits, and seven notes; it’s what we do with them that’s important.” – Ruth Ross

“The real voyage of discovery consists not of seeking new lands but of seeing with new eyes.”– Marcel Proust

There are three colors, ten digits, and 12 notes (half steps count). There are 26 letters (in our alphabet anyway). There are even a finite number of words and chords, though sometimes some of us love to push those boundaries. But there are not a finite number of ways of experiencing and responding to the world, of expressing ourselves, or of the minute detail that makes each of our expressions of self truly unique.

Even inside us, we rediscover the same hills that have to be climbed and the same fields of abundant, blooming fruit and flowers all the time; it is only how we experience it that changes. And what we do with it.

So here is the real problem: why do we expect it to be otherwise? Why do we not understand that we bring ourselves everywhere we go and so the greatest work we do is with our own instruments of creation–our very selves–whatever our art form?

Being human is an art form. Relationship is a collaborative art form.

What do you do with the colors in your palette, the letters in your vocabulary, the digits on your calculator, the notes of your voice?

Shellen Lubin and her songs have been featured on television, radio, and in Milos Forman’s film Taking Off. She has written, acted in, and directed numerous plays, musicals, and cabaret pieces.
